Depending upon the type of the college, BDS admission process may vary from one college to another. Broadly speaking, there exists two main types of dental colleges – government colleges and private colleges.

All government colleges and reputed private dental colleges follow merit based admission process. Under merit based admission process, seats are allotted among eligible and deserving candidates on the basis of their performance in relevant entrance exam (like NEET).

In other words, the entrance examination facilitates the admission process. A merit list is prepared on the basis of marks secured by candidates in relevant entrance exam. This merit list is used to allot seats among deserving candidates.

Another mode of admission is – donation based admission process. Many private colleges have few seats reserved under the management quota. These management quota seats are later allotted to eligible candidates under the donation based admission process.
